Prison Walkthrough - Accommodation
Inside a prison cell
There are very few single cells in prison and most cells are shared. Prisoners may be able to keep a number of items in their cells but should check with a prison officer first. Unconvicted prisoners (commonly referred to as remand prisoners) may be allowed extra items but if later convicted these items will be removed and stored with their other property.
The prisoner can request a non-smoking cell although there is no guarantee that this will be supplied.
Maintenance of Cell
The prisoner must keep their cell/cubicle/personal space clean and most prisons will expect the prisoner to empty their rubbish daily. In a shared cell the prisoners are all responsible for the cleanliness of the cell floor, the cell furniture and the cell door and window areas. Prison officers carry out inspections of cells, although this routine will vary from prison to prison.
