Coming forward

Should you come forward if you know that you have, or think that you have been a victim of crime?

If you have been the victim of a crime you may have doubts about whether to report what has happened to you. You may well be feeling upset or confused and have doubts about who you should speak to.

There is no legal obligation to contact the police, but the information you give them could make the difference in bringing a criminal to justice. This could prevent further crimes and protect others from becoming victims. All crimes, even less serious crimes with no obvious victims, have a negative effect on our neighbourhoods, so by reporting what you know you may be helping your community.

If you don't report crime you are still able to seek advice and support from organisations such as victim support.

Please bear in mind, the criminal justice system can only work effectively with the help of the public.
